It’s Just Like Having a Tour Guide in Your Car™

WHAT TO EXPECT:
The Road to Hana is one of the world’s most scenic drives and a popular sightseeing activity to see Maui’s spectacular waterfalls, black sand beaches, bamboo forests, lava rock formations and amazing ocean views as you wind your way through 620 curves and 59 bridges.

If you prefer travelling independently, at your own pace, GyPSy Guide provides the best Road to Hana tour experience, along with the freedom to choose what you enjoy; squishing the black sand between your toes at Wai’anapanapa, hiking the Pipiwai Bamboo Trail, or maybe time to enjoy an extra slice of banana bread.

You can’t help but cheer on the world class windsurfers at Ho’okipa. And you won’t need to worry about photoshopping the Rainbow Eucalyptus at the Ke’anae Arboretum or the stunning contrast between blue water and black lava rock at Ke’anae Peninsular.

Take a moment to cool off with a quick swim at the pristine Hamoa Beach and see where Haleakala National Park descends from the summit to the sea and the “Seven Sacred Pools” of Oheo at the end of the drive.

With such a long day of exploring (expect 8-12 hours), it’s important to know the 5 “not to be missed” stops, and the many more suggestions if you have time. Part of the secret to enjoying the journey is knowing how not to waste your time, and we have tips for that as well.

On the return drive from Hana, we’ll point out the not to be missed stops again as well as tell you stories about Hawaii’s fascinating history and rich culture.

Please note Highway #31 ‘backside route’ is not recommended for driving. Rental car insurance void. Road can be closed for repairs, mudslides and flash floods.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE:

Some of the highlights along the route include;

• Ho’okipa Beach Park
• Paia
• Ke’anae Peninsular
• Wai’anapanapa Park, Black Sand Beach
• Hana
• Hamoa Beach
• Wailua Falls
• Twin Falls
• Upper Waikanai Falls (3 Bears)
• Pools of O’heo (Seven Sacred Pools)
• Pipiwai Bamboo Trail

**Reservations to visit Waianapanapa State Park and black sand beach are now mandatory**

BATTERY USAGE:
++ Continued use of GPS/Location Services in the background increases battery usage. We strongly recommend taking a cigarette style (DC outlet) car charger. Avoid using a direct connection to the USB port of a rental vehicle.

IPADS:
** iPad models must include a GPS chip. Please note that Apple only install these on the iPad Wifi + Cellular models. Wifi only iPad models have limited location service capabilities and are unable to play commentary automatically.

DOWNLOADING:
The apps are larger in size in order to work offline. You must be on wifi to download as the store may block the download over cellular networks.

Pros and cons of Road to Hana Maui GyPSy Guide app for iPhone and iPad

Road to Hana Maui GyPSy Guide app good for

A perfect App to guide you through all sights and the entire day! A must-have for everyone driving the road to Hana!
One of the best apps Ive bought. Excellent way to drive the road to Hana without the need to read a book or map to figure out where to stop, where to slow down and what to skip. Invaluable.
My family and I spent 9 hours on Mauis "Road to Hana" and return yesterday and used this app for both directions. "App Man" as my children named him was fantastic. The suggestions on where to stop were excellent and perfectly timed. The history and stories told on the return trip were interesting and helped wile away the hours on the drive back. Well done! We will seek out more Gypsy Guides for future travels.
You will not be disappointed if you download this app! It keeps you entertained the whole way there and back without being annoying. Saw stuff we would have missed otherwise and as first-time visitors to Hawaii also learned a lot about the culture & history. Felt like when the narrator left we were losing a friend. :)
This app was even better than I had read on TripAdvisor! It was like having our own personal tour guide in the car. It worked perfectly even when I had ZERO cell phone reception. Couldnt recommend it more highly.
Just did the road to Hana and this app was perfect. So many interesting bits of information and history. Loved the fact that it was GPS based so info was timed to where we were. Word of warning if renting a Ford- you cant have your phone synched to Sync. The app will randomly cut out. As soon as we unpaired the phone it worked perfectly.

Some bad moments

Location services was on but the app would not connect to any GPS. Stop description should include mile marker #s. We spent the entire trip guessing where we were and what was coming up next. App was a big let down as we were expecting it to guide/alert us to stops. Stick to the Maui magazine write ups and save your money. I want my money back.
I consider this my worst app. I ever paid for. Needs to be better programmed for how it works as you click through the arrows which they could better align with using mile marker numbers. We got frustrated using it and went back to the travel book because it gave more information and a better description of the stops. If I could get my money back I would. This app. is going to be deleted as soon as possible. Its not worth it. Stay away. the first few commenters have likely not used the app as the ratings are so high.
I would love to tell you that this app worked but it didnt. It was fun for the first 10 minutes and the it stopped working. We actually missed stopping at some of the key places. It was informative but most of the time we didnt know where we were & had to pull out a trustworthy map. Not worth the money!!
As we started the drive we received the message that the narrative would start as we approached points of interest. We saw our location on the map at one time and then it disappeared and we never heard any other audio. It was a complete waste of money and frustrating. I wish I could return the product. Don’t buy it.
We downloaded the ap so we would be sure not to miss anything on the road to hana. The ap clearly could pick us up as the blue dot was locating us the road most of the trip but none of the arrows triggered to give us information even when we clicked on them
My family and I just finished the Road to Hana tour and we absolutely loved it! Informative and entertaining!
